Simple Steps to Create Content for your Website

Without question, your website needs content.

Having content ensures your site gets found by potential customers and is ranked by search engines for relevant keywords or keyword phrases.

So what is the minimum amount of content you should have on your site, and is there such a thing as too much content?

How much content do I need to rank in Google?

First of all, let's start with a small certainty: Google doesn't like pages with little text.

Have you ever wondered why you always find Wikipedia among the top results? Because it is a site which deals with subjects in a very circumstantial way.

This is why Google believes that this is the most complete answer to the user's question.

Websites that rank well organically tend to have plenty of text-based content on every page of their site.

Typically, they also have a landing page for each of the specific products or services that they offer, which is something that your website should have too.

You should also consider adding an FAQ that answers any questions your potential clients may have.

One issue with pages with little text is that they also cause usability problems for your site.

In this case, it is better to group the information together so as not to make the user go around in circles to find what the information they are looking for.

While there is no set definition or rule for ‘short text’, under 300 words of text on a page starts to be a bit too short.

We can also see things from this angle: more than 300 words justifies the creation of a page.

How to create content for your site

What if you don't have enough content or ideas?

It’s certainly not a good idea to write long pages of text just to fill the page.

On the other hand, it’s not advisable to create a very short page just for the sake of it. In this case, you can either disregard the page completely, or look for ways to expand the content.

There are so many pages you could include on your website, but some of the most essential include:

· Homepage

This is likely to be the first page that your visitors see.

It should be eye-catching and compelling, not just in terms of content but also in terms of design.

We recommend plenty of whitespace complemented by interesting, engaging text that inspires users to continue browsing.

· About page

This page should feature a longer description of the company and its roots.

Include your company philosophy (alternately, this could be a page in itself), as well as team members (again, this could be a page in itself).

Describe what makes you stand out from the competition and why visitors should choose your products or services.

Make sure your brand voice shines through and use this page to showcase any awards or achievements you have received.

· Services/Products page

Dedicate a page to your products or services.

Begin with a summary of each offer. If you have multiple products or services, you should filter them down into sub-product/service pages, and sort them by category.

Most importantly, make sure you have clear product descriptions so that your customers know exactly what to expect from that particular product or service.

Also, include a call-to-action so your customers can either contact you or complete an order.

· Blog/news page

A blog or news page is the ideal way to engage with current and potential customers.

This is your opportunity to reveal your company’s latest news, offer some insight into the latest trends or share details about new products or services.

Having a blog is beneficial in terms of attracting more conversions – and hopefully leads.

Keeping your site up-to-date is also good for SEO rankings and brand engagement.

· Contact page

A great website is pointless without a contact page! Your contact page should include essential information such as:

· Telephone number

· Email address

· Mailing address

· Social media channels

· Opening hours

You may also wish to include a contact form that users can fill in. your main contact information should also be included in places such as the header or footer of your site.

For instance, you could write about:

· Your company history/story

· Achievements/merits as a brand

· How your products or services excel versus the competition

· The experience of your employees

· Testimonials

· Product previews

· Questions and Answers

There is so much scope when it comes to content creation on your site, and this is also a great opportunity to include your relevant keywords.

However, when you do publish content, make sure that content is meaningful, valuable and interesting.

Don’t just publish content for the sake of it as this could put off potential clients and lead them to a competitor.
