5 alternatives to Google: their role in your Swiss SEO strategy

Search engines and shared sources

Your customers may search for services on Bing, DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, Qwant or Swisscows. To decide how much time to invest, examine the visits and enquiries they bring. Several services share search providers: five engines do not mean five independent indexing strategies.

1. Bing: start with indexing and diagnostics

Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and examine crawl problems. Microsoft documentation describes available data and functions, including URLs and sitemaps. Submission helps you notify the engine about pages; it guarantees neither indexing nor ranking.

Start with pages that explain your offer and let people contact you. Check that their URLs work, permitted crawlers can access them and internal links help people find them.

2. DuckDuckGo: account for Bing

DuckDuckGo describes multiple sources and its own crawler, but says it largely obtains traditional links and images from Bing. Check your pages’ presence in Bing without assuming that both engines show identical results.

Test searches related to your services in your customers’ country and language. A personal search does not provide a stable ranking measurement.

3. Ecosia: check the results provider

Ecosia documentation updated in August 2026 lists Bing, Google and EUSP among its partners. Providers vary by country, device and settings. In that update, Ecosia describes EUSP results as available only in France. For a Swiss search, check available providers; partnerships and coverage may change before 2027.

Check provider information on the results page when analysing a search. Advertising and organic results may use different sources.

4. Qwant: avoid outdated simplifications

Qwant described its own index and supplementary use of Bing in a 2023 publication. This explains a historical architecture; it does not establish the composition of every current result. Ecosia and Qwant also develop EUSP, as Ecosia documentation explains.

Describe Qwant neither as a complete copy of Bing nor as a service without external dependencies. For your pages, maintain accessible structure, explicit information and links useful to readers.

5. Swisscows: separate Swiss origins from local visibility

Swisscows describes its Bing partnership in its explanation of how search works. Its Swiss positioning and privacy policy do not guarantee priority for Swiss businesses in results.

Check queries relevant to your business and identifiable visits in your tools. Focus your work on information useful to customers and identified technical problems.

Measure before allocating budget

Compare visits attributed to each engine, landing pages and qualified enquiries. Tools can lose referral information: missing data does not demonstrate that no users exist. Low volumes also limit conclusions about conversion rates.

Fictional example: a service business receives relevant enquiries from Bing but few identifiable visits from other engines. It resolves crawl errors and improves its service page before starting five separate projects. It reviews enquiries after a period appropriate to its volume.

For 2027 planning, document the providers and measurements you use, then recheck them when they change. AI assistant responses need separate analysis. Start with your pages and our search and acquisition services.
